MFL Curriculum
Our Vision
A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing. It should also provide opportunities for them to communicate for practical purposes, learn new ways of thinking and read great literature in the original language. Language teaching should provide the foundation for learning further languages, equipping pupils to study and work in other countries.

Our Curriculum
The 2014 National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages aims to ensure that all children:
At Rimrose Hope we believe a high quality languages education will foster children’s curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world, developing their understanding of different cultures. We also believe that learning a language will help children develop skills that will open further opportunities later in life. The teaching of German in KS2 follows the objectives set out in ‘The National Curriculum programmes of study for Modern Foreign Languages 2014’ and provides an appropriate balance of spoken and written language. The intention is to assess and teach the appropriate content in relation to the ability of the child, and to ensure progression when appropriate. We intend to provide all children, regardless of ethnic origin, gender, class aptitude or disability, with a broad and balanced MFL curriculum.
Our Pedagogy
Here at Rimrose Hope, our aim is that all KS2 children are able to confidently express their own ideas and thoughts in German. The skills to do this are embedded and built upon from year 3 right through to year 6. We use the agreed pedagogical approaches, encouraging lots of speaking and listening tasks and also incorporating Chatafit sessions into our teaching of German. All of this helps to build up children’s knowledge of language and motivate children to extend their skills by making the subject relevant to their lives.
In this section you will find the programme of study as outlined in the National Curriculum, information on Chatafit, as well as links to websites and games that your child may find helpful.
Mastery and Depth
Curriculum breadth for German outlines the core knowledge for each topic around which teachers have developed a coherent and deliberately sequenced curriculum to promote the development of children's knowledge and understanding building upon prior knowledge.
Curriculum depth in German allows for children to progress in their knowledge by first remembering more, progressing to knowing more which they can then draw on as they learn to understand and use longer sentences and generate their own language.
We determine progress as 'remembering more and knowing more'. We believe that when new knowledge and existing knowledge connect in pupils’ minds, this gives rise to understanding. We look for children, as their knowledge and understanding develops, to show that they can make connections, draw parallels and use increasingly sophisticated sentences which draw upon their knowledge of the language.
