Key Stage 1 Curriculum

KS1 Curriculum

Our curriculum aims to enable all children to become:

· Successful learners who enjoy learning, make progress and achieve

· Confident individuals who are able to live safe, healthy and fulfilling lives

· Responsible citizens who make a positive contribution to society

Key Stage 1

This Key Stage includes children from Year 1 (ages 5-6) and Year 2 (ages 6-7). In KS1 the curriculum builds on the children’s experiences in the Early Years Foundation Stage. At KS1 the children begin to work from the National Curriculum. The core subjects of English, Maths and Science are given the most teaching time and are prioritised. In addition we teach all other subjects including ICT, History, Geography, German, Music, Art, PE, Design Technology, Personal Social Health Education (PSHE) and RE.

ICT, History, Geography, Art, DT, PSHE are often taught through a thematic or topic approach in a creative, practical and interactive way. We change our topics on average every half term. Some topics may be whole school topics like for instance our Eco-friendly or Healthy Living weeks.

We also aim to provide each year group with a wide range of experiences to further enrich the topics. These experiences would include visitors coming to school or trips to places relevant to the topic. Class teachers work in close consultation with our team of support staff of Teaching Assistants.

Our KS1 department has always given the highest priority to the teaching of reading and phonics. Our approach to the teaching of phonics is through the RWI and  ‘Letters and Sounds’ Schemes. This is taught daily in ability groups. We follow the Oxford Reading Scheme. This is well supplemented with other schemes such as, Phonics Bug and Project X.

Religious Education is also very important in our school and we follow the Sefton LEA Agreed Syllabus.
